This was always going to be an incredibly ambitious short film and I do like a challenge, so obviously I was excited /scared to take on something which wisdom would dictate really needed at least a day to rehearse and maybe a few more rolls of film for my comfort and reduced grey hair! But the challenge was to shoot the film in one day, in the one take (a story told in 10 minutes - the length of a 1000’ roll of film) and all from a 50ft crane, in a tightly constructed concrete space, working largely with cast from the community and with the added pressure (but also joy) of shooting on 35mm film! So this was the premise of the ONE STOP FILM 2019 competition which TIN LUCK was the winning entry for and which I did question quite why I was flying back to London from Spain were I was prepping a shoot, to embrace this undoubtedly stressful experience (because it wouldn’t be as fun if it was easy… maybe?!)

As you might expect with such a limited time frame and stock, it was a high pressure day where the focus and concentration each time we turned over was palpable (another caveat of the challenge being we only had 3 shots to get it in the bag!) but which was an incredibly gratifying experience to work so closely with my amazing camera and grip teams, as well as the cast and community of the Maiden Lane where the film was shot, to achieve this. The film was conceived, written and directed by the incredibly talented Beatrix Blaise, working closely alongside the community to create this small snapshot of life there. TIN LUCK has got off to a fantastic start in its festival life premiering at Raindance Film Festival in Autumn 2020 where it was nominated for Best UK Short Film.
